Faith Winter 1980-2025

It is with great sadness that we learned of the tragic loss of State Senator Faith Winter Thursday morning, as the result of a car accident Wednesday night.

We are heartbroken for our local legislators, Faith’s colleagues, who served alongside her, were her friends, and who witnessed firsthand her remarkable accomplishments as an esteemed legislator, not only leading the way in addressing sexual harassment within the halls of the Capitol and beyond, but being a champion for paid family leave, the environment, and transportation.

Faith also met personal and health challenges with bravery and humility. At 45, she was to embark upon yet another chapter of service to our beloved state, continuing to make it a better place to live for all Coloradans. She will be sorely missed by so many.

Our sincere condolences to her extended family, her two kids, Sienna and Tobin, her fiancé, Matt Gray, and the very large circle of folks who loved Faith.

Rest in peace. — The Board of Longmont Area Democrats

“Our state is shaken by the loss of Senator Faith Winter, and I send my deepest condolences to her children, loved ones, friends, and colleagues across our state. Faith was a fierce advocate for hardworking Coloradans, women, and families, and our climate. I’ve known Faith for nearly twenty years, first as an organizer for environmental causes and then expanding women’s representation and leadership, and finally, as a state senator. I have had the honor of working with her on many issues to improve the lives of every person and family in our great state, and tackling climate change. I am deeply saddened for her family, her friends and colleagues, and her community. Faith’s work and advocacy made Colorado a better state.” — Governor Jared Polis

“Susan and I are devastated to learn of the tragic loss of Colorado State Senator Faith Winter.

Faith fought passionately for the people of our state. She was a tireless advocate for parental and family leave and our citizens’ access to effective transit and transportation in their daily lives.

We send our deepest condolences to Senator Winter’s family and friends during this unimaginable time.” — US Senator Michael Bennet

“Faith was a deeply complex person, and she moved through multiple challenges with grace and remained dedicated to the work she was doing. She believed in the work she was doing, believed in the power of friendship and connection and will always live on that way and certainly live on in my heart.” — State Senator Lisa Cutter

“She was just always happy, and willing to reach out, and had a great attitude, and willing to put the work in. And was really good at her job, good at what she did, good at helping get folks elected, good at representing her district, good at being a chair, good at shepherding major pieces of legislation. She just really excelled at a lot of that and she will be very missed. I’ll miss her the rest of my life.” — former State Senator Kevin Priola

“Faith Winter was a trailblazer, a leader, and a friend like no other. She did more to meaningfully improve the lives of Coloradans than almost anyone in our state’s history. Senator Winter championed an immense list of historic legislation, from equal pay to climate justice to finding billions of dollars for transportation. Her legacy to Colorado will outlast all of us. Nobody has worked harder to uplift other women and emerging leaders as they rose themselves. The gut-wrenching loss of this titan, who loved sunflowers and called so many of us ‘friend,’ is an inestimable loss for our state and for the progressive movement.”  — Sara Loflin, Executive Director, ProgessNow Colorado

Food Bank Donation Resources…

On Nov. 1, 600,000 Coloradans, including many children, will be directly affected by the suspension of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) due to the republican shutdown. Governor Polis is seeking state legislative approval for emergency funds to support food banks, but this funding is a temporary measure and will not cover all lost federal benefits. Please consider donating monetarily to local food banks (more on why in the video, below), because they will be overwhelmed especially right now, and they know best how to use their resources. It’s a good idea to check their websites first before donating:

Longmont Food Rescue

Community Food Share

OUR Center

St. John the Baptist Food Bank

Westview Presbyterian Church Round Pantry

ALSO please watch the Elizabeth Cronise McGlaughlin Resistance Live video, below. At timestamp 8:13, she covers the importance of monetary contributions to food banks, but also stresses the urgency of folks taking an active role, in your own neighborhoods, to address food insecurity — and ways to do so —especially right now. The rest of the video is also very good, as are all of McGlaughlin’s broadcasts, providing action oriented steps you can take during these challenging times — “Be a part of the solution, however small your role may be…Solutions exist. There is power in people organizing. There are way more of us than there are of them.” We highly recommend these Tuesday through Friday videos (go to youtube, enter a search for “Elizabeth Cronise McGlaughlin Resistance Live”. You might like these videos so much that you’ll subscribe for as little as $5/month.) VIDEO:

Donate Button for Boulder County Indivisibles, see details, below:

Forever Indivisible Resistance Engagement (FIRE) has started a “Boulder County Indivisibles” virtual food bank team for making monetary donations to Community Food Share. We’re helping our neighbors experiencing food insecurity access healthy, nutritious food. Join us, and together, we can do even more.

Rising costs of food and health care, along with the expiration of SNAP benefits mean that more and more people across our community must make difficult choices, like paying bills, buying medications, or buying food. Our Boulder County Indivisibles team is raising money for Community Food Share so that our neighbors don’t have to make those types of choices.  Each $1 donated can help provide $6 worth of groceries!  Your gift will help provide fresh, nutritious food across Boulder and Broomfield Counties. Donating is fast, easy, and secure… and you can be sure that it will benefit a great cause!
