LAD MEETING:
Gun Violence Prevention — Actions in Colorado, Wednesday, May 3, 6:30pm, via zoom.
We’re excited to bring you this informative and inspiring event, recognizing gun violence as the public health crisis that it is.

You’ll hear local students Emrie Butterfield, will provide her perspective, along with members of Students Demand Action. You’ll hear teachers and Longmont City Council members Susie Hidalgo-Fahring and Sean McCoy, who will talk about their advocacy for students in this fight. And you’ll hear Senator Tom Sullivan, who’s valiantly fought for and won gun legislation, and Senator Sonya Jaquez Lewis, who vowed to put forth a gun bill every single year she has served — and has done so. (The legislative session will be in its final week at the time of our meeting, so we will be cognizant of our legislator’s schedules — but we are so grateful they’ve carved out time for this meeting.)

We’ll present a history of Colorado’s fight for better gun laws, the successes of current GVP bills, what went wrong with HB23-1230 Prohibit Assault Weapons In Colorado, and why, as you’ll hear from local students, who’ve grown up with active shooter drills, we can never give up. Within weeks of each other, students from Denver, and students from Nashville, marched in large numbers to their state capitols — signifying a reckoning that is sure to last until finally, the essential right to safety is fully realized in America.

PLEASE JOIN US, & PLEASE TELL A FRIEND Wednesday, May 3, 6:30pm, via zoom. We will send the zoom link in this blast at 9am and 6pm on Wednesday, May 3. Or you can email us at longmontareadems@gmail.com with “send me the zoom link!” in the subject line.

RESOURCE DOCUMENT for April 4, 2023 LAD Meeting (including videos, slides and links), here.

LAD MEETING: Health Care Legislation by Local Electeds, TUESDAY*, April 4, 6:30pm, via zoom.

LAD regularly brings you inspiring legislative updates…Tuesday’s meeting is no exception! With a bit over one month left of the General Assembly’s 120-day(only!) legislative session — this is where things get exciting!

You’ve perhaps heard of the challenges our duly-elected democratic reps have faced this session: late nights and arduous schedules during the week, and working through the last several weekends to combat 17-hour filibusters — and more — from republicans. Even though, and likely because, republicans are in the minority, straight out of the GOP playbook, Colorado republicans have sought to stall and obstruct democracy for Coloradans.

BUT OUR DEMOCRATIC REPS FIGHT ON & HAVE PREVAILED!: Gun violence prevention, reproductive rights and access, right to repair, housing, employment fairness, fair campaign practices — time allowing, we’ll briefly go over several bills…

For this meeting, we will highlight the amazing progress that our local democratic legislators have made in Universal Health Care for Colorado, as well as mental health policy for our state, and our schools. With State Representatives Judy Amabile (HD49), and Kyle Brown, (HD12), and State Senator Janice Marchman, (SD15).

You don’t want to miss the inside scoop on how our state legislative Democrats are transforming lives in Colorado.

PLEASE JOIN US, & PLEASE TELL A FRIEND THIS Tuesday, April 4, 6:30pm, via zoom. We will send the zoom link in this blast at 9am and 6pm on Tuesday, April 4. Or you can email us at longmontareadems@gmail.com with “send me the zoom link!” in the subject line.
(*We’re having the April 4 LAD meeting on a Tuesday, out of respect for those observing Passover, which begins Wednesday)

RESOURCE DOCUMENT for March 1, 2023 LAD Meeting (includes youtube link), here.

Our March 1, 2023 LAD MEETING — Juvenile Justice Reform, Restorative Justice & Diversion, Wednesday, March 1, 6:30pm, via zoom. With an update on the justice system. This meeting brought to you in partnership with the Boulder County Democratic Party (BCDP) and the BCDPs Outreach & Inclusion Team: Boulder County diverts more than 200 juvenile cases a year, or more than half of all juvenile cases, and recidivism rates are consistently less than 10% — even for felony-level crimes. Boulder County District Attorney Michael Dougherty and Elaina Shively, Director of the Center for Prevention and Restorative Justice, will speak on how their office makes this possible. A visionary approach that tells us empathy and accountability can exist in the same space, with positive results for the future of our Boulder County community.
